Meet the McGavock Scholars

March 28, 2017

I’m Marisol Guzman. I graduated from McGavock High School last May and was thrilled to receive the McGavock Scholars scholarship. I was very fortunate to attend McGavock and take part in the academies there. Being a part of the Academy of Hospitality and Finance and the Entrepreneurship pathway, I was able to get a job at both the US Community Credit Union and Gaylord Opryland Hotel.

I recently completed my first semester at Babson College in Massachusetts, and I sure did learn a lot. Thanks to various scholarships including this one, I am going...

My name is Rachel Stoneman, and I am an 18 year old, first-year college student at Volunteer State Community College. I am a proud graduate of McGavock High School as of May 2016, and I am extremely grateful and honored to have received the McGavock Scholars scholarship because it has allowed me to go into my college years confident, prepared, and excited. This scholarship empowered me with a strong sense of independence because I didn’t have to ask my parents to pay for my books, which everyone knows can be expensive. Not to mention, it feels...

My name is Said Mohamed. I graduated from McGavock High School in May 2016 from the Academy of Aviation and Transportation and am currently a Mechanical Engineering student at Tennessee Technological University. I earned a 4.0 GPA during my first semester of college in the fall of 2016. The McGavock Scholars scholarship has helped me to achieve this goal. There are many expenses associated with attending college, and many students have trouble focusing on schoolwork because they have to work to pay for everything. This scholarship helped to cov...

My name is Shannon Moshier, and I graduated from McGavock High School in May of 2016. I was in the Academy of Health Science and Law and served as an Academy Ambassadors. I used the TN Promise—combined with a few other scholarships to help with tuition—for my first semester of college at Volunteer State Community College. The McGavock Scholars scholarship is what helped me the most, though. My major is Pre-Nursing, so I have quite a few lab courses that I have to take for my degree. These labs have expensive books, as well as lab fees. The $500...

I’m Akram Mikhail, a 2016 graduate of McGavock High School and a current student at Tennessee Technological University. One of the first things that every student learns in college is this: college is expensive! Fortunately, I received several scholarships that made attending college possible. But, those scholarships didn’t cover the cost of textbooks. Thanks to the McGavock Scholars scholarship, I was able to purchase my Graphics, Chemistry, Psychology, and Calculus textbooks for the fall semester. I am incredibly grateful for the scholarship,...
